People seek therapy for many different reasons, and it’s not uncommon to wonder if it’s the right step for you. Often, individuals come to us because they feel overwhelmed, stuck, or unsure how to navigate challenges in their lives. You might notice recurring patterns in your thoughts, emotions, or behaviors that you’d like to change, or you might be struggling with a specific issue that feels too big to manage on your own.
Here are just a few examples of situations and concerns that therapy can help address:
Emotional challenges: Feeling anxious, depressed, or unable to manage stress effectively.
Life transitions: Adjusting to changes like a new job, divorce, moving, or becoming a parent.
Relationship difficulties: Navigating conflict, communication issues, or disconnection with a partner, family member, or friend.
Grief and loss: Coping with the death of a loved one or other significant losses.
Trauma and healing: Processing past experiences that continue to affect your thoughts, emotions, or behaviors.
Self-discovery: Exploring your values, beliefs, or identity and finding greater purpose and meaning in life.
Behavioral patterns: Breaking cycles of procrastination, self-sabotage, or unhealthy habits.
Work or school stress: Managing burnout, career challenges, or difficulties balancing responsibilities.
Parenting and family dynamics: Navigating the complexities of parenting, blended families, or caregiving roles.
Chronic health conditions: Finding ways to cope with pain, illness, or the emotional toll of a medical diagnosis.
Sometimes, people come to therapy without a clear problem in mind—they just know something feels “off,” or they want to feel more fulfilled in their lives. Others may have tried therapy before, with varying levels of success, and are seeking a fresh perspective or a therapist who feels like a better fit.
Therapy is a space where you can explore what’s going on in your life without judgment, in a way that’s tailored to your unique needs and experiences.
-
The length of therapy sessions can vary depending on your specific needs and the focus of counseling. Typically, most sessions are approximately 55 minutes long, but this may differ based on the issue being addressed or the structure of therapy. Whatever the session length, it is discussed and agreed upon in advance as part of the scheduling process.
In terms of frequency, most clients are seen once a week. However, this can also vary depending on your goals and the type of therapy being provided. Some clients may attend therapy more frequently during particularly challenging times, while others may shift to biweekly or monthly sessions as their needs evolve.
-
The ages we work with vary depending on the therapist. Our play therapists typically work with children as young as 3 years old, while other therapists focus on working with adults, older teens, or a combination of both. Each therapist has their own areas of expertise and preferred age groups, which helps ensure the best possible fit for your needs.
When you contact us to schedule a session, we’ll discuss your age group and any specific preferences or goals you have for therapy. This allows us to match you with a therapist who is experienced in working with individuals in your age range and who can provide the support you’re looking for.
-
As therapists (LCMHCs, LCMHCAs, and LCSWs), we provide therapy but cannot prescribe medications. Physicians, such as psychiatrists (MDs), nurse practitioners, or physician assistants (PA’s) are typically able to prescribe medications. We can refer you to local providers if medication might be helpful in improving your overall functioning and managing symptoms. We’re happy to discuss this further with you during your sessions.
-
If you are currently working with a counselor at our practice and need additional support, we encourage you to review the plan you and your counselor have discussed for managing difficult situations between sessions. Depending on the circumstances, you may also contact our office to see whether your counselor has an earlier appointment available. Please note that additional appointments cannot be guaranteed and availability varies.
If you are experiencing a mental health crisis, need immediate support, or are unable to reach your counselor, resources may be available 24 hours a day, including:
988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (Call or Text 988)
Guilford County Behavioral Health Center (24/7 Behavioral Health Urgent Care)

What is a Superbill?
A superbill is a detailed receipt that includes the necessary information for insurance reimbursement. You submit this directly to your insurance provider.
But keep in mind that you will need to find out from your insurance company in advance if they will pay for any reimbursements that are submitted through your superbill.
If using OON benefits, you will pay the full session fee* at the time of service.
*Our full session fees are: $205 for the first/initial session and $185 for additional or follow-up sessions for individual counseling. -
If our self-pay rates are not affordable for your current situation, there may be other options available.
Depending on availability, some counseling practices offer services through counseling interns or practicum students who work under the supervision of a licensed therapist. These services are often offered at significantly reduced rates and, in some cases, may be provided at little or no cost.
You may also wish to explore resources such as:
Open Path Collective – A nationwide network of therapists offering reduced-fee counseling services.
Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) – Some employers offer counseling benefits that provide a limited number of sessions at no cost to employees and, in some cases, their family members. Check with your employer's Human Resources department or benefits administrator to see if an EAP is available.
Community mental health agencies, nonprofit organizations, universities, and training clinics that may offer lower-cost counseling services in your area.

Our office can often help estimate your mental health benefits before your first appointment. However, insurance companies determine coverage and provide benefit estimates that may change based on deductibles, copays, coinsurance, authorization requirements, and other factors. We encourage clients to contact their insurance company directly to better understand their coverage before beginning services.

Yes, we offer both in-person and virtual therapy sessions, providing flexibility to meet your needs and preferences. Depending on the therapist, there may be options for in-person counseling at our office or secure online therapy sessions from the comfort of your home.
It’s important to note that some therapies are typically better suited for in-person sessions. For example, play therapy and other approaches involving hands-on or experiential techniques, such as sand tray or art-based therapies, are usually held in the office to allow full access to the tools and environment needed for effective work.
When you contact us, we’ll discuss your preferences and goals to help determine the best format for your therapy. Whether you prefer in-person or virtual sessions, our priority is to create a safe and supportive space where you can focus on your growth and well-being.

General office questions, scheduling, cancellations, and billing:

If your appointment is canceled with less than 48 hours' notice or you do not attend your scheduled session, you will be charged the full fee for the missed session ($130). If we have your card information on file, this amount will be charged automatically. If not, your balance will need to be paid before a new appointment can be scheduled.
-
We understand that illnesses, family emergencies, work obligations, transportation issues, and other unexpected situations can arise. Life happens, and we recognize that most missed appointments are not intentional.
When you schedule an appointment, that time is reserved specifically for you. Because counseling sessions are scheduled in advance, it is often difficult or impossible to offer that appointment time to another client when a cancellation occurs with less than 48 hours' notice.
Many people assume that if a cancellation occurs because of illness, an emergency, or another circumstance outside of their control, a fee should not apply. While we understand that perspective, the challenge is that unexpected situations occur in many different forms. Clients may miss appointments because they are sick, caring for a sick child, dealing with a family emergency, attending an unexpected work obligation, experiencing transportation problems, forgetting an appointment, oversleeping, or facing other last-minute situations.
Because every circumstance is unique, it becomes difficult to apply different rules fairly and consistently from one situation to the next. For this reason, our practice follows a standard cancellation policy rather than evaluating each missed appointment individually.
We do try to extend grace when appropriate and may occasionally waive a fee at our discretion. However, repeated exceptions make it difficult to maintain a consistent policy and can significantly impact our ability to reserve appointment times and provide services to all clients.
Insurance companies do not reimburse therapists for missed or late-canceled sessions. As a result, when an appointment is reserved and cannot be filled, both the therapist and the practice absorb the loss of that time.
Our cancellation policy is intended to create a fair and consistent process for all clients while allowing us to continue providing quality care and maintaining appointment availability for those seeking services.
We review this policy during the intake process, include it in our practice paperwork, and send appointment reminders before scheduled sessions so that clients have multiple opportunities to review the policy and make changes to their appointments when needed.
-
If you believe you may be late for your appointment, please contact your therapist or our office as soon as possible. The sooner we know, the more likely we are to determine whether the appointment can still be held or whether it will need to be rescheduled.
Counseling appointments are scheduled for a specific amount of time that has been reserved just for you. Because therapists often have other appointments scheduled before or after your session, arriving significantly late may make it impossible to provide the full appointment time that was reserved.
In many cases, if you arrive more than 15 minutes late, the appointment may need to be rescheduled. This is especially true when there is not enough time remaining to provide a meaningful session or when another client is scheduled immediately afterward.
Additionally, if you arrive at the office or log in for a telehealth session after a significant delay without prior communication, your therapist may no longer be available. Depending on the circumstances, they may have assumed you were unable to attend, left the office, moved on to other responsibilities, or begun preparing for their next scheduled appointment.
If this occurs, please contact our office as soon as possible so we can discuss next steps and assist with rescheduling if needed.
If an appointment must be rescheduled due to a late arrival, the missed or late-cancellation fee may apply. However, we recognize that circumstances vary, and exceptions may be considered on a case-by-case basis. Because each situation is different, we cannot guarantee that the fee will be waived.
We encourage clients to contact us as soon as they become aware of a delay so that we can discuss available options and determine the best course of action.

While we strive to provide consistent and timely care, there may be rare occasions when a counselor has an emergency, becomes unexpectedly ill, or needs to cancel with less than 48 hours' notice. Similarly, in rare cases, a prior session may run over due to an emergency, which could cause your counselor to start your session later than planned. If this occurs, our group will notify you as soon as possible, and we will make every effort to reschedule your session promptly. We also track these events to ensure they remain exceptional rather than frequent occurrences.
As a group, we value fairness and understand that life is unpredictable. Just as we extend grace to clients who occasionally need to cancel due to illness or other unforeseen circumstances, we ask for the same understanding when emergencies affect our team. However, it’s important to note that if a pattern of frequent, last-minute rescheduling occurs—either on the part of the client or the counselor—we will address this to ensure therapy remains productive and consistent for all parties.
We are committed to open communication and working with you to maintain a reliable and supportive therapy experience. If you ever have questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to our office at (336) 884-9510 or hello@newdayhp.com.
